Today:

A much more settled days weather ahead with only scattered showers mixed with brighter spells. The majority of the showers will appear across western areas, with Inverness enjoying best of shelter. Southwest winds fresh to strong across western coasts, Isles. Maximum temperature 7 °C.

Tonight:

Showers generally confined to the western Isles and western Highlands. Clear spells and light winds towards Inverness bringing a chance of a frost come dawn. Minimum temperature 1 °C.

Tuesday:

Another day of brighter spells and showers. This time outbreaks few and far between for the morning, before building mid to late afternoon. Southwest winds fresh to strong in west. Maximum temperature 7 °C.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

Wednesday cloudy and windy with periods of occasionally heavy rain. Thursday and Friday brings blustery showers, these heavy at times.

The unsettled theme is likely to continue through the first part of this period, with further rain or showers affecting many parts at times, and often accompanied by rather windy conditions. In the run up to Christmas, there is a signal for less unsettled conditions to begin to take hold, with a greater chance of high pressure developing in the vicinity of the UK compared to the previous few weeks. Whilst the chance of impactful rain or strong winds should reduce, there may be an increasing incidence of overnight frost and fog, the latter perhaps taking its time to clear, given the time of year. A gradual reduction in temperatures seems likely, falling closer to average overall. Some cold days are possible, if or where any fog persists.

High pressure will probably remain influential across the UK during this period. This means an increasing likelihood of dry weather compared to the winter so far. Despite the greater signal for settled weather, showers or occasional bands of rain are still possible at times, especially later in the period towards January. These could be wintry in nature. Temperatures are expected to be close to normal for the time of year.
