Odd wintry shower today. Patchy rain and hill snow later.

Today:

Another cold day for many, with some ice this morning. The odd wintry shower still possible, but becoming brighter for the afternoon. Rain then returning across the far west of Pembrokeshire by the evening. Gusty winds. Maximum temperature 6 °C.

Tonight:

A murky evening with cloud, patchy rain and hill snow moving eastwards. Turning drier overnight with clearer spells and a patchy frost developing from the west. Winds easing. Minimum temperature -1 °C.

Thursday:

Some early bright spells, but turning cloudier from the southwest. Heavy rain, mainly hill snow and strong winds developing during the afternoon, with coastal gales. Still feeling chilly. Maximum temperature 6 °C.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

Rain and snow clearing eastwards leaving showers on Friday. Winds easing. Brighter and drier on Saturday, with frost early and late. Rain, some snow and strong winds returning on Sunday.

This period carries much more uncertainty than usual as milder air from the Atlantic attempts to displace the cold air over the UK. On balance milder, or at least less cold conditions are likely to make some progress into the country by Monday, bringing a spell of snow for some areas, most likely central and northern parts with rain more likely across the south and west, before it either clears or dies out. Its uncertain as to whether these less cold conditions ever reach the extreme north and east, and here it may well remain cold throughout. Further into next week its likely to remain cold across the north and east, these colder condition possibly extending back into the rest of the country.

The outlook through the latter part of January and into the start of February is typically uncertain. A broadly southwesterly regime is marginally favoured bringing changeable conditions. Spells of wet, windy and mild weather are likely. Some colder, drier interludes with overnight frost and fog are possible. As during mid-January, while milder conditions are marginally favoured, there remains a chance of further cold spells extending across the country.
