    Largely dry but cloudy for New Year's celebrations.

    Today:

    A frosty start to New Year's Eve with fog locally lingering until late morning. Elsewhere, plenty of sunshine to begin, though cloud gradually building during the day. Remaining dry but feeling cold. Maximum temperature 6 °C.

    Tonight:

    Largely cloudy this evening. Outbreaks of rain arriving across Cumbria towards midnight and then moving southwards overnight. Increasingly blustery, limiting frost to upland areas. Minimum temperature 2 °C.

    Thursday:

    Showery rain clearing to begin New Year's Day with brighter spells following. Variable cloud in the afternoon with a few showers around Merseyside and Cheshire. Chilly in the gusty wind. Maximum temperature 6 °C.

    Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

    Prolonged periods of sunshine on Friday and throughout the weekend. Mostly dry, though scattered wintry showers possible in the south. Breezy and turning colder with severe frosts and ice overnight.
