Sunny spells and showers, most frequent in north this afternoon

Today:

A rather chilly start to a bright day with sunny spells and showers. The showers few and far between this morning but expected to become more frequent this afternoon, especially across Moray and northern Aberdeenshire where it will become cloudier. Maximum temperature 10 °C.

Tonight:

Showers become increasingly confined to the Banff and Buchan coast this evening and overnight. Elsewhere long clear spells develop and, with winds falling light, a fairly widespread frost is expected. Minimum temperature -1 °C.

Thursday:

A mainly dry morning with long sunny spells. The sunshine turns increasingly hazy through the afternoon, with occasionally heavy rain spreading northeast from late afternoon. Strengthening southeasterly winds. Maximum temperature 11 °C.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

Remaining unsettled with showers or longer spells of occasionally heavy rain, best chance of drier conditions with some sunshine on Sunday. Breezy at times, with southeasterly coastal gales on Friday.

The changeable and at times unsettled weather is likely to continue through early November, with low pressure dominating the UK. This means further showers or longer spells of rain at times. All parts could see some heavy rain, but it is likely that western areas will be wettest. Strong winds are likely from time to time, with gales or severe gales a possibility. Equally there should also be some, at least brief, drier or clearer interludes, these more prevalent further east, but perhaps becoming a little more widespread and long-lasting by the end of the period. With winds predominantly blowing from a westerly or southwesterly quadrant, above average temperatures are most likely, with a reduced incidence of overnight frost and fog, compared to normal, especially at first.

A gradual transition from an unsettled westerly type to something less unsettled is anticipated through the middle part of the month. With time, greater incidences of high pressure look set to affect the UK, bringing more in the way of dry weather, but also increasing the chances of overnight fog and frost. By later in the month, the majority of any wet and windy weather is more likely to affect areas further to the north. Overall, temperatures look to pan out near to a little above average.
